Andersen 400 glider: head/sill plugs or sash seal?

Distinguish localized head and sill plugs from long continuous moving-sash gasketing. See the evidence checklist and fit limits.

Quick answer. For an Andersen 400 Series gliding window, small head and sill plugs occupy the top and bottom frame junctions where the two sashes meet. The manufacturer says missing plugs can allow outside air in. These are a different location and problem from the 200 Series check-rail bulb that sits at the stationary sash's meeting edge. 123

A location-first troubleshooting map

Where is the missing or damaged piece? Component to investigate What not to assume
Top of the frame, right where the sashes meet 400 Series head plug. 2 Do not identify it as a long sash-strip profile merely because you feel a draft. 1
Bottom of the frame at that sash junction 400 Series sill plug. 2 Do not assume the bottom frame feature is the same as a check-rail bulb. 3
Vertical joining edge on a stationary sash, and the product is actually 200 Series 200 Series check-rail assembly. 3 It follows a different bulb/rigid-vinyl repair logic. 4

Five-minute documentation path — no disassembly

First, record the product series and whether you are looking at the frame or the sash. The 400 Series help article assigns plugs to frame junctions, while the 200 Series check-rail article describes an edge of the stationary sash. 23

Next, photograph the full closed gliding window so the sash junction is visible. Label two close-ups head / top frame junction and sill / lower frame junction. Use your images to identify whether a plug is actually missing, visibly damaged, or simply hard to see. Andersen directly names missing head/sill plugs as a possible air-entry path, not as proof that every draft comes from a plug. 1

Then, check the parts decision. The Andersen 400 Series plug article describes its replacement head and sill plugs as universal in size and color within the 400 Series gliding-window scope. 5 That is a series-bounded statement; it is not an interchangeability claim for 200 Series windows, patio doors, or generic plugs.

Finally, identify the repair risk. Andersen's plug instructions entail sash removal and installation sealant; this worksheet deliberately does not substitute for that procedure. If the sash cannot be safely supported or the window model remains uncertain, arrange qualified help rather than prying at the frame. 2

Decide your next step

  • Confirmed 400 Series + missing top/bottom plug: use the corresponding Andersen plug source for model and replacement validation. 15
  • 200 Series + center-edge soft bulb damage: use the check-rail bulb source; Andersen distinguishes bulb repair from rigid vinyl damage, for which it recommends stationary sash replacement. 43
  • Neither source matches: keep the photographs and series evidence; do not install adhesive or substitute a universal generic strip.

Output: series / head-or-sill-or-center-edge / frame-vs-sash / observed missing-or-damaged evidence / photo / applicable OEM document. The classification is useful even when part selection is still on hold.
