Identification method
Weatherstrip Identification Methodology
Use the mounting interface and measured cross-section to narrow the profile family before you compare replacement options.
Recommended order
- Start with location and movement. Note whether the seal is on a hinged door, sliding panel, window sash, garage-door bottom or perimeter.
- Identify the mounting interface. Look for a kerf stem, T-slot/T-end, adhesive backing, surface fastener, retainer or another receiver.
- Inspect the end-view shape. Bulb, pile, leaf/flap, foam, felt and sweep bodies can look similar from the side but behave differently.
- Measure the geometry that controls retention. Base width, stem width, slot or throat geometry usually matters before the soft sealing body.
- Measure the sealing element in a relaxed state. Avoid stretching or deliberate compression, and record uncertainty or wear.
- Compare sources and stop if a critical interface differs. Do not upgrade a generic family match into exact product fit without separate evidence.
Claim classes stay separate
- Generic identification
- Profile family, mounting style and observable geometry.
- Measured observation
- A value taken from the user’s sample or receiving channel, with unit and uncertainty.
- Product identity
- A manufacturer/model/part claim supported by a source or marking.
- Exact replacement fit
- A compatibility claim that needs separate source-backed fit evidence.
