Andersen storm door: measure edge seal to sweep lip

Define a specific measurement datum; avoid measuring full door height as a substitute. See the evidence checklist and fit limits.

Short answer. In Andersen storm-door manual p/n 900725, the edge seal is not cut from a generic full-door-height number. The guide measures from the top of the door to the inside lip of the installed sweep, then transfers that same measured distance to the edge seal. Publisher reference

The two landmarks you must identify

Start: the top of the door slab, not the upper frame or rain-cap edge. Finish: the inside lip of the bottom sweep, not the bottom of a flexible fin or the threshold. Both endpoints are shown in Step 9, drawing “a,” on printed page 9 of manual 900725. Publisher reference

Landmark Record in your sketch Avoid this substitution
Upper datum Top of the door Frame or trim height
Lower datum Inside lip of sweep Lowest sweep fin or threshold
Position after fitting Seal top flush with top of door Seal flush with frame lip Publisher reference

What to do before making a cut

Safety before installation. The same Andersen guide warns that the cut metal edge seal has sharp bottom corners and instructs rounding them with a metal file to prevent injury (printed p.9, Step 9(b)). This guide does not authorize cutting; follow the complete model-specific manufacturer directions or use a qualified installer. [NP02_Q02_NW0077_C_SAFETY01]

  1. Confirm that your storm door and edge-seal kit actually follow manual 900725. Its Step 9 illustrations are presented for the specified left-hand installation, not an all-model geometry rule.
  2. Make a photo of the whole handle-side edge and a close photo showing the sweep's inside lip. Label both measurement endpoints in a sketch. Publisher reference
  3. Place the edge seal only for visual comparison in the published orientation: Andersen has the rounded face toward the exterior and the weather pile touching the handle-side Z-bar. This orientation is a check, not permission to force a different extrusion into that slot. Publisher reference
  4. Read the manufacturer's top alignment: the edge seal should align with the top of the door, not the projecting frame lip. Publisher reference
  5. If the supplied kit, door handing or sweep construction differs, pause. A dimension copied from a different door is not verified by this source.

What a valid measurement can prove

When the manual, landmarks and seal orientation all match, you have a reproducible cut-line reference for that specific installation drawing—not evidence that a particular replacement edge seal or hardware set fits an unrelated storm door. If the sweep is missing, the lower endpoint is not available from this source; photograph the missing component and obtain the correct model instructions rather than inventing a substitute height.
