Andersen storm door: identify slide-in sweep fin track

Distinguish a sweep fin retained in a slide-in track from other bottom-edge seal mounts. See the evidence checklist and fit limits.

Short answer. In Andersen's storm-door installation instructions p/n 900725, the flexible sweep fins (P) are distinct from the sweep body (F). The guide shows the fins sliding into tracks beneath the sweep body; that is the identification feature to look for, rather than merely a flexible strip at the door bottom.

What “slide-in” means in this specific guide

The manufacturer's step-3 drawing (printed page 4) shows multiple underside fin tracks, not an adhesive bead or a push-on U-shaped seal. Its instructions describe sliding in the fins, trimming projecting excess, and crimping each end of the sweep track to keep them captive.

Observation Meaning for identification
Fin material lies in a lengthwise groove beneath a separate sweep extrusion Consistent with the track-and-fin layout shown in guide 900725.
End of a track has a localized pinch The guide uses end crimping as its retention step for this assembly. Publisher reference
Only a bottom bulb, screw-on blade, or unknown extrusion can be seen Not sufficient to call it this Andersen track/fin system.

A low-risk inspection sequence

  1. Identify the actual guide/door model; the diagram in p/n 900725 is not a universal Andersen sweep specification.
  2. From a safe, accessible position, photograph the entire bottom edge and an end view that shows whether there are open longitudinal tracks.
  3. Mark where the sweep body ends and where a replaceable fin begins. Use the OEM labels F and P only if the construction genuinely matches the publisher's page-4 drawing. Publisher reference
  4. Note any visibly closed/pinched track ends. The instruction's crimp step explains why a fin may be mechanically retained instead of simply sliding out. Publisher reference
  5. Keep measurement notes as observations; the cited page does not independently verify a replacement part number, universal groove width or compatibility with another storm-door model.

Do not confuse recognition with a repair authorization

An installed crimp or aged sweep can be damaged by forced removal. This article is primarily an identification and evidence-capture guide; it does not recommend uncrimping, prying, destructive disassembly or a substitute fin. If the door does not match p/n 900725, stop at the photographs and look up the instructions for the exact model. If it does match, consult the whole manufacturer's installation document before performing work rather than isolating one cropped illustration.
