Quick answer. The symptom does not on its own establish the correct replacement weatherstrip or a single proven failure. Observe the exact joint and normal closing behavior before replacing a part; if there is a building-water path, alignment problem or safety-rated assembly, obtain model-specific service guidance.

The location of the failure matters

An adhesive-backed weatherstrip that peels from painted timber or metal can fail at more than one boundary: the tape can lose contact with the frame surface, a paint/finish layer can lift, or the seal body can separate from its backing. These outcomes should be photographed distinctly before applying another adhesive. 3M's VHB product class resources show the general importance of clean, dry and compatible bonding surfaces; they are not evidence that VHB chemistry or its cleaning solvent is suitable for your building seal. Capture the failure face

If a length has already detached, place it on clean paper; photograph both its original mounting side and the receiving surface. Record whether the frame retains sticky residue, paint flakes, bare substrate or a smooth clean coat. Note how recently painting/staining occurred, any washing or use of oils, whether the seal was stretched during application, and exactly where peel started. Do not peel off an otherwise intact strip for the sake of testing.

Different observations, different questions

Paint stuck to the adhesive: is the finish itself loose or not fully cured? Adhesive remains on the frame, seal detaches: was the correct bonded seal/tape supplied? Ends retract and lift: could installation tension, curve or poor end contact matter? These are competing possibilities, not a source-verified diagnosis. Manufacturer instructions for both seal and finish take precedence over general tape advice.

A no-damage response

Avoid sanding, scraping or solvent cleaning unknown coatings, particularly in older structures where disturbing paint may create lead dust. Protect the detached section, document the issue, and request product-specific surface preparation, application temperature, dwell time and finish compatibility from the adhesive/strip issuer. Do not transfer 3M VHB primer, cleaning ratios or bond-pressure values to unverified weatherstrip tape. [3M_SURFACE]

Why not use the replacement color as proof

Schlegel describes some Q-LON products as a foam core in a protective liner with a distinct retaining insert, illustrating why the visible outside layer is not the mounting adhesive. That construction belongs to its product family only, not to an unidentified sample. [SCH_QLON]

What would support a real fix?

A positive answer requires the exact weatherstrip or tape SKU, substrate/finish chemistry, coating cure instructions, manufacturer-approved preparation, and whether the part is intended for that mounting location. If those are not known, state bonding compatibility not verified and refer the failure sample to the installer, tape maker or door/window manufacturer.
