Short answer: These are two documented NGP automatic door-bottom products, not equivalent replacement inserts. The 222NA-36 is catalogued as an anodized-aluminum surface automatic bottom with a black neoprene sealing element; NGP's product cut sheet describes the elastomer compound as synthetic EPDM in a polypropylene matrix. The 680DKB-48 is a dark-bronze, heavy-duty surface automatic bottom with black nylon brush and an EPDM rubber insert. In NGP's 680 cut-sheet cross-section, the fine downward bristle bundles and internal narrow rubber contact feature belong to a single specified 680 assembly; they are not evidence that an unidentified old brush carrier will accept a 222-series component. Which evidence identifies which product?
| Visible / documented clue | NGP 222NA-36 | NGP 680DKB-48 |
|---|---|---|
| NGP listing | Anodized-aluminum automatic bottom with neoprene seal [N01] | Dark-bronze heavy-duty surface automatic bottom with nylon brush and EPDM rubber insert [N02] |
| Primary contact style in NGP illustration | Molded / flexible rubber sealing body [N03, N05] | Brush filaments together with manufacturer-identified EPDM feature [N04, N06] |
| Nominal retail variant | -36 in this specific listing [N01] |
-48 in this specific listing [N02] |
| Installation family | Surface, push-side per product sheet [N01, N03] | Heavy-duty surface, push-side per product sheet [N02, N04] |
The number and finish code are identification aids only. A 36- or 48-inch listed variant does not by itself prove correct net door width, handing, floor clearance, threshold geometry, or compatibility with the existing assembly. NGP advises specifying the exact net length and checking the product's installation information rather than selecting by visual resemblance. [N01, N02, N07, N08]
What does “brush plus EPDM” mean in the 680 cross-section?
The manufacturer's 680 product cut sheet is the source for that two-material description; do not assume any brush that looks similar contains the same rubber feature. If a seal is still mounted, take a well-lit end-on photograph of the lower bar: note two filament groupings, any visible flexible insert, the outer aluminum carrier, end-cap markings and the manufacturer label. Do not dismantle the mechanism just to stage a photo. The cut-sheet drawing is a reference image for the specified 680 family, not a universal profile gauge. [N04, N06]
Carpet, a hard threshold, and mistaken substitutions
NGP says nylon-brush sealing can be appropriate on carpet where no threshold is provided and separately recommends a threshold for maximum sealing performance. That is manufacturer application guidance, not a warranty that the 680 will work on every carpet pile or that the 222 cannot work on any particular floor. Carpet height, clearance and closure force have not been evaluated for a reader's door here. Do not add a threshold or replace the bottom solely from this comparison. [N01, N02]
Non-destructive identification worksheet
- Record the exact NGP series and suffix from the existing unit and any order paperwork; photograph both ends without removing covers.
- Photograph the closed door bottom and the sill or carpet, then document whether the underside seals against a threshold, carpet or another surface. Observe only; do not force a door closed.
- Record whether a visible rubber lip, black brush bundle or mixed brush-and-rubber bar is present. Mark unknown when dirt or an end cap obscures the cross-section.
- With the door safely accessible, note handing, push/pull side, and door function. If the opening is fire/smoke-labeled, a controlled exit, or powered/access-controlled, stop at documentation and consult the responsible door professional.
- Ask NGP/dealer: “For my exact product code, edition and existing door assembly, what is the current complete unit and separate insert service identification? Is any insert interchangeable, and what evidence supports that answer?”
What cannot be concluded
This evidence does not confirm that an EPDM insert, brush cartridge, neoprene lip, or internal drop mechanism can be exchanged between 222NA and 680DKB. It also does not certify a rated-door modification, a smoke seal for the installed assembly, an ADA threshold, or the suitability of a given gap. The NGP sheet is product evidence; the door label, assembly conditions and accepted servicing instructions still control on regulated openings. See the separate guidance on understanding gasketing certification and the site's existing door-bottom measuring guide.
