On paired fire doors, a meeting-edge gasket and an astragal are not interchangeable permissions. UL specifically says a gasket used at meeting edges is not intended to replace an astragal that the door manufacturer requires, or change the specified clearance between the leaves.
The original manufacturer / authority evidence, separated by claim
- UL states that meeting-edge gasketing cannot replace an astragal if the door manufacturer requires one. Publisher document — PDF printed p11 / zero-index p10 > Gasketing and edge seal materials.
- UL also says such gasketing does not authorize a changed clearance between the paired door leaves. Publisher document — PDF printed p11 / zero-index p10 > Gasketing and edge seal materials.
- The Kansas Fire Marshal 2014 checklist separately records door clearances, correct coordinator operation and required gasket integrity. Publisher document — PDF zero-index p8 > Checklist for Swinging Doors / NFPA 80 §5.2.4.2.
How to make the distinction
Three questions to keep separate
Is an astragal required? Read the actual paired-door manufacturer's assembly instructions rather than deciding from the presence of a brush, fin or bulb. Is a meeting-edge seal specified? Check the seal's certified scope and its exact location; a gasket listing is not a door-pair design revision. Are closing and coordinating functions intact? Record concerns for the responsible inspector rather than altering one leaf to make a seal look flush.
| Finding | Next documented check | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Astragal present | Compare against the listed door-pair configuration | Identity or permission unknown |
| Only gasket visible | Determine whether manufacturer separately requires an astragal | Absence cannot be justified by gasket appearance |
| Leaves interfere or rub at the meeting stile | Qualified check of coordination and clearance | Do not trim, shim or compress seals to force closure |
Reader checklist: identification and safe handoff
- Photograph the pair as a complete assembly and the meeting stile with leaves closed, without removing or pressing anything.
- Note each door label, active/inactive leaf and observable coordinator status as facts for the facilities team to verify.
- Request door-manufacturer astragal instructions, exact gasketing listing and applicable inspection records.
- Escalate missing documents or impaired closing/latching to a qualified fire-door professional; do not field-modify the doors.
What the evidence does—and does not—settle
Supported: astragal, meeting-edge gasket and door-clearance are distinct verification questions. Not supported: deleting a required astragal, reducing clearance with a thicker seal, or declaring an unverified door pair compliant.
