Short answer. JaCor's April 2021 Barn Door Brush Seal Installation guide identifies a top holder, side holders and bottom holder as distinct parts of its illustrated system. Its typical bill of materials uses a 45-degree top holder, straight side holder, and straight bottom holder, each with a brush chosen for its location. [J01] That is a location-specific maker recommendation—not evidence that every sliding barn door, roller system or latch uses those holders, nor permission to drill into an unknown frame.
Three areas to inspect without changing hardware
Top/header. Observe the gap at the stationary header above the moving leaf. Record its variation over the door's visible travel, without reaching into tracks. JaCor's 2021 typical kit describes a 45-degree holder at the top. [J01]
Side/jamb. Look for the stationary vertical gap along the opening. In the 2021 guide, straight holders are described for the sides specifically to allow horizontal movement. That does not mean a brush in an unintended position cannot rub or bind on a different product. [J02]
Bottom. Photograph the clearance between the door's lower edge and actual ground/track/threshold surface. JaCor's bill of materials describes a straight bottom holder; do not extrapolate the bristle's labeled length into an installation gap measurement. [J01]
| Symptom | Distinct evidence to collect | Avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Daylight above door | Header height and whole opening width, plus track location | A side brush will reach it. |
| Draft beside overlap | Exposed side gap and direction of slide | Any thick side brush will clear the moving leaf. |
| Debris at bottom | Lowest point of floor surface and door clearance | A nominal brush label establishes closing pressure. |
| Interference during movement | Exact rubbing spot and obstruction shown in still photographs | Cutting or bending holders without maker approval is safe. |
Manufacturer source versus customer measurements
The 2021 JaCor bill of materials refers to brush options of 1.5–4 inches in that example setup; its separate website describes a broader commercial range and 4-foot and 8-foot stock sections. [J01][J03] Neither value proves the particular brush reach your building needs. Do not substitute a commercial brochure's stock length for a custom door measurement.
A good quote request distinguishes frame width, frame height, head gap, side gap and bottom gap; the assigned Memtech manufacturer quote interface asks for those dimensions individually. [J04] In this draft the purpose is only to collect data for qualified product selection, not to prescribe cutting or fastening dimensions.
Before a quotation or service visit
- Photograph the complete opening and identify the sliding door type, number of leaves, movement direction and frame material.
- Mark gap locations top / each side / meeting edge if two leaves / bottom on a simple sketch. For a double-slider, the Memtech quote form separately asks for the greatest gap between the doors at the center; preserve that as a distinct measurement, not a side-gap assumption. [J04]
- Record visible weatherstrip/brush holder attachment type and whether it appears on the fixed frame or moving leaf. Never remove the roller track for this inspection.
- Ask the vendor to confirm the relevant top/side/bottom holder from the correct edition, planned bristle contact clearance, and suitability for the opening's operating and safety constraints.
- Escalate to a professional if the door binds, is powered, is very heavy, has anti-lift or safety hardware, or is part of a required egress route.
Not verified: This evidence does not provide universal brush size, weather performance, exact cross-brand replacement, fire/smoke protection or clearance for the actual barn door. The maker's installation PDF contains fastening and cutting steps; this guide intentionally does not repeat them, since hardware authorization and safe door support must be established first. An independent visual/field measurement is useful, but it is not an approved retrofit plan.
Original figure brief: An original side-elevation drawing of a generic sliding panel with four labelled observation arrows (header, jamb, meeting line, bottom) and a blank measurement grid. Do not reproduce OEM diagrams or show attachment holes.
