A code printed beside a YKK AP door-jamb diagram is not an all-purpose seal ordering number. It might identify the aluminum framing member supplied with a weathering insert, a different storefront system, or a similar-looking member in a regional manual. Before asking for a replacement seal, write down the storefront system name and the manual's publication number, date and diagram page. In some YKK AP drawings the elastomer weathering is included; in another illustrated thermal series it is not included. [Y1–Y4]
Four examples where the manual changes the answer
| System and exact issuer edition | Diagram code | What the drawing says |
|---|---|---|
| YES 40 FS/FI, 02-4015-12, effective 2025-05-27, page 3 | AS-0451 | Single-acting door jamb; E2-0051 elastomer weathering included |
| YHS 50 FS, 02-4006-27, effective 2026-05-11, page 2 | AS-0504 | Door jamb; E2-0051 weathering included |
| YHS 50 FS, same page 2 | AS-0551 | Door jamb for 35HL/50HL doors; E2-0051 weathering included |
| YES 45 FS/FI Canadian assembly, 02-4004-11, effective 2025-06-06, page 4 | AS-0421 | Single-acting door jamb in that Canadian system; E2-0051 weathering included |
| YES 45 TU, 02-4009-33, effective 2025-06-20, page 3 | BE9-2581 | Single-acting thermal door jamb for 25T/35T/50T; E2-0051 weathering not included |
These are five document-specific statements, not a cross-model substitution list. AS-0504 and AS-0551 belong to separate YHS 50 FS door groupings, while the illustrated Canadian YES 45 entry has its own manual and context. A code for a framing member need not be the part number for its replaceable weathering material. [Y1–Y4]
Identify which component is causing the problem
Start with a wide photograph of the storefront opening: one or two door leaves, the frame, head and threshold. Without disassembly, take detail photographs of the jamb stop, the meeting or astragal area if present, and the threshold contact point. Mark the location of the suspected leak on an annotated copy. Door-jamb elastomer, glazing gaskets and threshold weathering serve different positions; they are not interchangeable merely because the drawings share the word gasket.
Photograph any readable system/manufacturer marking, dated shop drawing cover page, architectural schedule and installer documentation. If no system name is visible, ask the building owner or facade contractor for the original as-built storefront submittal. Record approximate exposed seal cross-section and the length of the affected location, but leave installed joints intact. A squashed rubber profile may not show its original dimension; label uncertain measurements as estimates rather than exact replacement specifications.
When comparing manual pages, match all four items before reading a product code: (1) system name, (2) market/region, (3) effective date and publication ID, (4) figure or part table line. Do not copy a YES 40 or Canadian YES 45 line into a YHS 50 or thermal YES 45 installation.
What “weathering included” does—and does not—mean
It tells you how YKK AP labels that particular cataloged framing member in that edition. It does not prove that a given installed door still carries its original seal, that a separate seal can be purchased by quoting the framing code, that the same elastomer will engage another extrusion, or that field modification is approved. A damaged storefront, exterior entrance or rated/egress assembly warrants a qualified glazing/door service provider with the matching approved assembly documentation.
Send the identified system, dated drawing, code, location photos and any original product label to YKK AP or its authorized project contact. Ask for the model-specific current weathering replacement detail and whether replacement can occur without changing the approved assembly. If the source edition cannot be matched, preserve model/edition unknown instead of ordering by color or silhouette.
A safer way to read an architectural detail-page caption
The weathering notation and the aluminum framing-member notation occupy different roles. Read the system cover page, then the door framing member table, then the relevant detail callout. Keep their labels in separate fields: system / market / document code / issue / page / framing code / weathering note. If you only capture E2-0051 in a photo, you lose the important qualifier that it was shown as included in some documented assemblies but not included in another. The same seal notation in a different system drawing is not an automatic authorized field substitution.
Worked comparison: included versus not included
In the cited YES 40 FS/FI and YHS 50 FS document lines, the table describes E2-0051 weathering with its specified door jamb. In the cited YES 45 TU thermal document line, the manual labels the weathering not included with BE9-2581. The difference tells a procurement reviewer to ask whether the replacement is part of a supplied assembly or a separately specified project item. It does not identify what material is presently installed or tell a repairer how to remove it. Ask for the as-built bill of materials and current system-specific replacement detail.
Six-field system-document worksheet
| Exact evidence field | Record without extrapolating |
|---|---|
| Installed storefront/system identifier | ___ or unknown |
| Market | US / Canada / other / unknown |
| YKK AP publication code and effective date | ___ |
| Manual page/figure and framing member | ___ |
| Weathering shown as included or not included | ___; quote the local caption |
| Building-specific project detail/BOM verified | Yes / no; reference ___ |
Where the system cannot be identified, send an annotated full-opening photo and request the original shop drawings from the facility manager or installer. Avoid treating the entire door-to-frame air path as a single gasket: head/jamb weathering, glazing and sill conditions require distinct details.
Request template to the project contact
Our entrance is labeled [series unknown / series]. The drawing we are reviewing is [publication, date, page], and the framing member is [code]. Its weathering line says [included / not included]. Please identify the current component and approved service method for the installed as-built assembly; confirm whether our project has a separately supplied or substituted gasket. We have not assumed interchangeability.
Keep code and page images as references to issuer material rather than reproducing proprietary detail figures on the public website. No drawing is needed to show the basic evidence workflow above.
