Start with evidence you can observe

For a legacy or unbranded seal, missing packaging is not a reason to guess. Build an identification packet from the installed context, the receiver, the end-view cross-section, measurements, markings, and condition.

Decision workflow

  1. Location first. Record door, window, sliding/patio door, garage bottom, garage perimeter, floor threshold, or another clearly observed location.
  2. Receiver/interface second. Determine whether the seal is retained by a kerf/push-in stem, T-slot/carrier, adhesive face, surface fastener, retainer channel, floor mount, or an unknown/special interface.
  3. Body third. Record bulb/tube, foam-clad body, leaf/flap, pile/brush, tension strip, felt, sweep/brush, or other observable construction without forcing a family.
  4. Measure. Follow Reference for base/backing width, overall height, pile height, bulb dimensions, kerf stem geometry, channel geometry, projection, orientation and uncertainty as applicable.
  5. Use terminology cautiously. Legacy names, retailer labels and colloquial terms may narrow the search, but they are not compatibility evidence.
  6. Stop when evidence stops. If the receiver or critical geometry is unclear, keep the record partial/unverified rather than choosing the nearest-looking replacement.

Legacy/unbranded identification workflow

Minimum capture packet

  • end-view cross-section photo or tracing;
  • installed-location photo showing contact direction;
  • receiver/retainer photo after safe removal if available;
  • exact markings, printed codes or molded text;
  • measurement tool + resolution;
  • critical measurements repeated when practical;
  • condition notes: compressed, stretched, torn, hardened, painted over, dirty, or unknown;
  • original units preserved alongside normalized values.

Safe outcomes

A successful first pass can end at a generic profile family, a mounting interface, or a not equivalent decision between two sites. It does not need to end at a product purchase.

Stop conditions

Do not claim a current replacement when historical identity is not independently established. Do not infer a brand from color, age, installation location, or silhouette. Do not convert dimensional similarity into Source-backed fit.
