Silicone vs TPE: compare recovery and temperature

Require like-for-like standard, test condition and formulation before interpreting temperature/recovery figures. See the evidence checklist and fit limits.

First decide which metric the reader actually needs: service-temperature category, hardness, or compression-set recovery. A broad TPE family label or a generic silicone temperature range is not a measured result for the installed seal; note the exact compound grade and manufacturer document before comparing values.

Compare a material-category table with a compound datasheet

Worked comparison: put the temperature range printed in Trelleborg’s 2015 material-selection guide in a “material family” column, then record the TSP-LAST M 480-80A datasheet’s measured compression-set result in a separate “named compound and test conditions” column. Do not rank recovery unless the two compounds were tested at comparable temperature, compression and duration; document those conditions beside every number.

Read the named material datasheet for the stated test, duration, temperature and conditions. Category-wide figures or another compound’s lab value do not establish field compatibility or service life.

Reader decision path

  1. Write down the exact profile part number and what it seals; label an unconfirmed model unknown.
  2. Extract material designation, issuer date and whether the number is a category range, test result or application limit.
  3. Put each compression-set result on its own line with test method, test hours and temperature; do not compare unrelated testing conditions.
  4. Request the actual candidate profile's geometry, retention and compression/closing specification before selecting it. A favorable silicone-category limit does not identify a replacement groove or bulb profile.
  5. After an authorized fit, check door movement. DOE's exterior-door job aid says weatherstrip must not impede operation.

Stopping point: If only a marketing range for silicone and a laboratory number for a separate TPE compound are available, the choice remains not proven for this opening. This article teaches evidence comparison, not material-wide superiority. The manufacturer statements above are bounded to the cited versions and formulations.
